One popular catch phrase came from a man who lived in Louisville, Kentucky and who was born in Henryville, Indiana who's father worked in a coal mine. When he was only a young boy, His father passed away when he was just 5 years old. This would leave the leave his son with his wife to help take care of the house and his other younger brother and sister. His Mother worked peeling tomatoes in a canning factory and doing sewing at night to make ends meet. She would land what was a decent job at the time in a shirt factory where she brought the family closer together to work as a team to take care of things with the passing of their dad & her husband. She taught her son to work and to cook in the kitchen to help take care of the family and one food they did pretty well at in various forms were their ways to prepare chicken. His Mother would remarry to be able to take care of the kids. Unfortunately this young man did not get along well with his new stepfather who was apparently quite abusive towards him. This young man left home and over the next few years this young boy would grow and work and a variety of jobs including a farm hand earning a decent salary of roughly $15.00 per month and then he moved on to become a street car conductor while he was still just a teenager at the ripe age of around 15 In Albany, Indiana. He worked on a Ferryboat, Sold Insurance and worked a variety of jobs coming up. He became interested in becoming a fireman on the local railroad and even after serving in the Military. He actually earned a law degree where he would run into some of his own legal troubles from a scuffle in a courtroom which pretty well removed him from law. He bought the patent rights on a gas lamp design and began manufacturing these with some success only to eventually be displaced by the spread of electric lights. He wound up moving to Corbin, Kentucky where he was running a service or filling station along U.S. Route 25. We often called them filling stations back then as opposed to the name gas station today. In the operation of this filling station. Motorist would often ask him where they could get something to eat. He would often make foods to serve to weary travelers who would stop in hungry from the road seeking nourishment to replenish from their travels in a make shift restaurant next to where he was working with only a few chairs. He began to specialize with his own signature Fried Chicken, Ham, Vegetables and a really great biscuit he became famous for. With the success of his little one table restaurant with 6 chairs he moved across the street into a much larger restaurant and what became his most popular specialty food was his own recipe of fried chicken made with his very own recipe blend of 11 herbs and spices. Due to the popularity of this recipe, he took an 8 week course from Cornell University to learn the business side of what he was doing and enjoyed considerable success in running his own restaurant. By the way this man was named Harland David Sanders and he named his restaurant Sanders Cafe' only to be much later renamed Kentucky Fried Chicken which is a name you are probably most familiar with today. At the ripe age of 45, The Kentucky Governor Made him a Kentucky Colonel due to his exceptional & most delectable cooking skills. Mr. Sanders received the unfortunate word that a highway construction project would soon divert traffic away from town where he enjoyed a fairly successful restaurant. This blow of progress in construction of the Nations highways would ultimately force Harland Sanders to close his restaurant and retire almost flat broke with the exception of his major retirement income at the time of just over Only $100.00 per month from a his Social Security check. Not being happy with this meager income and not wanting to simply rock in a chair on his front porch. He convinced others around him to invest in an idea in the marketing of his own Original Southern Fried Chicken Recipe for everyone around the State and even the Nation to enjoy. He knocked on doors and did whatever it took to get the word out and build interest in his own brand of Fried Chicken initially without much success. He built the restaurant foundation on Quality & Cleanliness. The rest is history and we now know this tasty recipe as Kentucky Fried Chicken that almost everyone on the entire globe enjoys today in all places speaking all languages. Harland Sanders Sold his franchise operation when he was 74 years old to a group of investors for the sum of roughly 2 Million Dollars. At this point he had roughly 600 franchised restaurants in both the Unites States & Canada. He lived the remaining years of his life traveling around & promoting this now quite famous brand of Chicken. Colonel Harland Sanders lived until he was Ninety years old where he became ill and ultimately retired from the business before his own death. Harland Sanders was born on September 9th, 1890 & Would Live Until December 16th, 1980 His would company would coin the phrase which will be forever burned into American culture which says it's "Finger Lickin' Good" and Kentucky Fried Chicken would become one of the Largest corporations in the World after various acquisitions over time including PepsiCo & Tricon Global Restaurants.
